Theatre Of The Mind

A Psychoanalytic Perspective On Theatre

In a time of instant gratifications, psychoanalysis and theatre offer something with the potential to be personally resonant, and profound.  In the analytic situation as on the dramatic stage, real people in real time and space create an illusion that is relatively unbound and temporally fluid.  This illusion has the potential to reverberate in the audience, or analyst and analysand, on deeper levels of recognition and transformation

Post performance discussions of each play in the theater series are held at South Coast Repertory Theatre or A Noise Within Repertory Theatre with a guest analyst  as discussant, providing analytic perspective that deepens and enriches the theater experience.  All discussions are sponsored by NPI In partnership with South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa and A Noise Within Repertory Theatre in Pasadena.

Shakespeare in Love, adapted by Lee Hall
Sunday, January 28, 2018, 2:30 PM
Discussant: Bill Edkins, Psy.D.
Young Will Shakespeare is desperate. He has writer’s block and owes two demanding producers a new comedy—a half-baked mess titled Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter. Enter his inspiration: Viola. Smart, beautiful and Will’s greatest admirer, she will stop at nothing—including breaking the law—to be in his play. As their love blossoms, so does his greatest masterpiece. Mistaken identities, ruthless scheming, and backstage theatrics make this romantic feast “a joyous celebration of theatre” (Daily Telegraph).
.
Cambodian Rock Band, by Lauren Yee
Sunday, March 18, 2018, 2:00 PM
Discussant: Bettina Soestwohner, Ph.D.
Part comedy, part mystery, part rock concert, this thrilling story toggles back and forth in time, as father and daughter face the music of the past. Neary, a young Cambodian American has found evidence that could finally put away the Khmer Rouge’s chief henchman. But her work is far from done. When Dad shows up unannounced—his first return to Cambodia since fleeing 30 years ago—it’s clear this isn’t just a pleasure trip.

The Sisters Rosensweig, by Wendy Wasserstein
Sunday, May 20, 2018, 2:30 PM
Discussant: Elena Bezzubova, Ph.D.
They’re each extraordinary in their own way. Sara, the successful banker. Pfeni, the globe-trotting journalist. And Gorgeous, the irrepressible radio host. Not bad for three sisters from Brooklyn in the early 1990s. When they gather in London for Sara’s 54th birthday, along with some of the men in their lives, the result is a witty, enthralling look at the quest for love, acceptance and self-fulfillment.
